Tactical Fund Disbursement for Hurricane Sandy Relief
Steve

I understand that there's some concern about FAWG's release of $900 from the tactical fund for hurricane Sandy relief. In the interest of transparency, I'd like to provide a transcript of the discussion that took place ("transcript", below). I've done this so that everyone can see what was said, and how the decision was reached.

Anyone who'd like to comment on this process is welcome to do so. In particular, if you think we made the right decision, then go ahead and say so. On the other hand, if you think this situation was handled poorly, please let us know how we could have done better.

Dear all-

As you must have heard by now OB is doing a run to help out with Occupy Sandy relief efforts in NY and NJ. We sent an email on the 4th (2 days ago) to Linda but received no response. The email prob. got 'buried' with other emails so am sending again to the entire FAWG group and account signers.

We will be renting a 24' UHaul truck on Wed. We have organized the logistics locker, are communicating with Boston drop off point people, and with Occupy Sandy organizing folks. We could use an emergency release of OB funds to help with this emergency action! Past history of FAWG always maintained the ability to act quickly in times of emergency. Lets come together in solidarity !

Amount needed: $800-$900, will provide receipts.

Message from Rene: We've got a sweet deal on a truck. $375 for a 24ft box truck for two days at $0.17/mile. The biggest cost will be gas and tolls ($450 gas with extra pickups). We're hoping to stop at any donation drop off points along 93 (or nearby from it) Part of the truck will have supplies from our supply depot. We'll be making pickups in the Boston area too. The rest of the truck is for any other place that can organize supplies for a Wednesday pickup.

Thank-you,
Rita

[Adding Allie, since they're also an account signer]

Rita,

I didn't see your earlier message; like you said, I think it got buried.

I completely support what you're doing, and I'm sure there's money in the tactical fund to cover it. (logistics, would you agree?)

Does anyone have concern about releasing $900 for this?

I'm tied up until ~ 4:30 pm, but I could meet up with Rita sometime after then. I live in _________, so someplace in the Arlington/Somerville/Cambridge area would be ideal.

I'm at ________ if anyone wants to call and talk to me. (It's a land line; I don't own a cell phone.)

Steve

I just thought of a concern. I think our ATM cards have a _____ limit. So we may need two people with cards, a check from linda, or a trip to _____ for an in-person withdrawl.

Thank-you. We can meet up whenever is good for you. Maybe two different withdrawals, one today, other tomorrow. We won't be leaving until Wed. afternoon.

Will provide receipts!

I just got off the phone with Rita.

I'm going to stop at the Somerville Ave. CPCU when they open tomorrow morning, and withdrawl $1000 from our savings account. Rita originally asked for $900. The extra hundred dollars is to provide a cushion, and if it's not needed, it will be returned.

I'll meet Rita tomorrow morning in the Porter Square T station lobby (outside the fare gates) to give her the money. We'll meet sometime in the 8:45 - 9:00 am timeframe.

Given the sentiments expressed during the last GA, this seems like the right thing to be doing.

If any of you have concerns about this disbursement, please voice them before tomorrow morning.

Steve

Rita,

The email you said was sent to me, was that the one signed by John Ford sent out over the Everbody list? I'll look back again, but I'm pretty sure that's the only one I got and it didn't seem particularly addressed to me. If there was another one, would you mind resending it?

Now I'll read the emails so far on this thread & comment, if that's what you're asking for.

I'm all for efforts to join the Occupy Sandy initiative. I can give you my personal opinions but I don't have any special authority different from anyone else, as you know.

Til soon (& in between other stuff!?!).

Thanks,
Linda

Thanks for these efforts to join with the Occupy Sandy initiative!

I'm forwarding this to the everyone list, which is the group that got the only other previous email I believe I've received about this-came yesterday from John Ford.

I'm personally fine with going forward as you 2 have requested as long as the specifics are simultaneously made available (by this email now) and the wider community can weigh in as your preparations continue. In the absence of a GA approval, as many people as possible weighing in with their approval or other responses seems important.

It would be helpful to have an approximate list of what you're taking out of the storage unit and what remains there, as far as you can see/estimate. We've been wanting & talking about clearing it out & putting the stuff to good use & this seems like it. Also, if the space can be emptied enough to eliminate it or move to a smaller unit (perhaps after getting the stuff delivered & folks get caught up on their lives), we can reduce or eliminate the current $312/mo we've been paying for this storage unit.

Let a me know if you need me to make a withdrawal-actually maybe I'll just go do that before going into Boston this afternoon. I'll let you know when I get to Community Church & we can arrange a handoff. How does that sound?

I'm open to other thoughts.

Thanks again!

In solidarity,
Linda

Please Let me know, We will of course keep receipts and do a report back.

Wow. I spend a few hours outside holding a sign, come back, and Linda's already got things wrapped up. Thanks Linda!

So there's no uncertainty, I will _not_ be meeting Rita Tuesday morning. (Since Linda has already taken care of handing off the money.)

As far as the everyone list goes, I (IMHO) would rather see us send a short summary / press release, as opposed to tossing people into the middle of an ongoing dialog.

Rita or John -- could you write up something short? You two seem the most directly involved in the nuts and bolts of putting this together.

I'd request that the announcement mention the $1k disbursement. I think that would be good transparency, and it might help people feel better after Sunday's fiscal discussion.

Y'all are awesome!

Steve

Sandy relief
Joe

There were some reservations about the process of alloting money for Sandy relief, but I have not heard anyone who said it was a mistake to send the money. Certainly, it was an emergency, it was a great cause, and thanks to all who put their hands to the effort.  Helped so many people and gave folks a differnt view of what "Occupy" means. If it has speeded up the pulse of OB and Occupy in general--- "better and better."
Maybe we should do more efforts like this, esp. in Boston area this winter. And , be ready to do that, by setting up some kind of "Occupy Emergency Relief Fund" and/or working group?   Idea has had some postive response so far.. I'd be keen to see the yeas and nays....
